Title: Structures Impeding Tidal Flow
Custodian: NSW Fisheries
Jurisdiction: New South Wales
This is a textual database describing the location of 1388 structures with the potential to alter tidal flow within NSW estuaries. The data is summarised for each Local Government Area and coastal catchment.
- FISHERIES
- Geographic extent name:
- NEW SOUTH WALES - State or Territory - New South Wales
- Geographic extent polygon:
- 141 -37.5, 154 -37.5, 154 -28, 141 -28, 141 -37.5
Note: The format for each Geographic extent name is: Name - Identifier - Category - Jurisdiction (as appropriate)
Geographic bounding box:
The bounding box encloses the maximum extents of the dataset. There may be voids or gaps within the bounding box, depending on the defined coverage of the dataset. Outer bounding rectangle as Latitude/Longitude coordinates based on the WGS84 datum (expressed as both Degrees Minutes Seconds and as decimal Degrees):
- North bounding latitude: 28 00 00.0 S (-28)
- South bounding latitude: 37 30 00.0 S (-37.5)
- East bounding longitude: 154 00 00.0 E (154)
- West bounding longitude: 141 00 00.0 E (141)
Lineage:
In 1991 NSW Fisheries began the Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project in the degraded wetlands habitats of Kooragang Island in the lower Hunter River. Impacts in the wetlands of the island are related to structures that reduce the tidal flow, in particular roadworks and culverts installed to facilitate land transport around the Island. This databse was therefore developed to produce an inventory of structures that impact on tidal wetlands in NSW. 1:25 000 LIC topographic maps were used identify the location of structures and each site was then field checked and typed. Data was summarised in terms of DLWC coastal catchment boundaries and also by Local Government Area boundaries.
Positional accuracy:
Text description of structure locations in relation to local features provided only - no coordinates provided at this time.
Attribute accuracy:
The likely location of structures below the estimated 2m contour was marked on 1:25 000 topographic maps, however in most cases the type of structure and the impact on tidal flow could only determined by field work. Each structure was inspected and classified as one of 6 types: Weir, Floodgate, Culvert, Causway, Bridge or Ford. Only structures found to impact tidal flow are included in the database. Impacts were described in free text for each structure although standardised expressions were used where appropriate.
Logical consistency:
Not Relevant
Completeness:
Field survey of all marked structures for NSW estuaries below the 2m contour was completed and while some additional structures were located others may exist. Only textual location information was recorded although potential exist to digitise the location of each structure into a GIS database.
